Charlton Flood Study in Progress

9 Aug 2011

North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) in conjunction with the Buloke Shire Council announces the appointment of BMT WBM to develop the Charlton Flood and Drainage Management Plan.

A community information session will be held on 23rd of August at the Charlton Shire Hall, to provide an opportunity for the community to meet the newly appointed consultants, and to discuss the Plan’s development and purpose.

The appointed firm BMT WBM, an Australia wide company and experienced water management expert, will work closely with the Charlton Flood and Drainage Management Plan steering committee, the Charlton Flood Recovery Group and most importantly the Charlton community.

North Central CMA Floodplain Manager Ms Camille White commented on the appointment “We received significant interest from consultants. Overall there were twelve tender applications from interested firms for the Charlton Flood and Drainage Management Plan”. These applications were assessed based on track record, technical expertise and proposed methodology.

“It is vital that the Plan advises the very best solution for flood protection in Charlton. We are committed to ensuring the Plan is delivered quickly and successfully.  After careful consideration the tender evaluation panel selected BMT WBM.”

“BMT WBM specialises in floodplain management, hydrology and flood hydraulics. They have undertaken a number of similar projects so I have confidence that the Plan will be sound”, concluded Ms White.

The Charlton Flood and Drainage Management Plan will investigate the issues that cause and or exacerbate flooding in Charlton. As well as investigating these issues it will also examine recommendations for works that can be undertaken to minimise future flood impacts. From those recommendations funding for the improvement works can be pursued. Funding for the Plan is provided directly by the Victorian Government.

BMT WBM will commence work on the Plan immediately.  All residents are encouraged to attend the public meeting on August 23rd. Details of the meeting will be communicated through the Shire of Buloke’s Flood Recovery newsletter.
