Catchment's Community Representatives to Visit Avoca Region

20 Jun 2008

The Natural Resource Management Committee (NRMC), chaired by Malcolm Brown, is a subcommittee of the North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) Board and advises on the environmental investment priorities within the region with an emphasis on river protection. It is made up of 16 members from across the region. Their key role is to provide local community perspectives to the projects undertaken by the North Central CMA.

Members of the North Central CMA's NRMC will visit key sites around Avoca next week.

According to Damian Wells, acting chief executive officer North Central CMA, the Committee's visit to Avoca is part of an on going series of regional tours to examine Natural Resource Management (NRM) issues first hand.

"Members of the NRMC come from a wide variety of locations across the Catchment, so it's important they are familiar with local issues," he said.

"The Committee members will visit a variety of sites in and around Avoca with a particular focus on the Upper Avoca River. Project sites will be visited that include examples of fencing to protect vegetation along the riverbank, soil erosion control efforts and the importance the river has to the social fabric of local communities.

"Given the important role the NRMC members play in providing advice and direction to our activities, these kinds of experiences are invaluable to help us with planning."
