Landcare was launched in 1986 at Winjallock, in the western part of the North Central region. It grew out of local Soil Conservation and Farm Tree groups and an alliance between the then Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands and the Victorian Farms Federation.

The number of Landcare groups continues to grow and we have over 180 Landcare and natural resource management groups within the north central catchment.

The future health of our environment is in the hands of the regional community - people who farm the land, live in the towns, manage natural resources, attend local schools or volunteer their time and energy for a better environment.

The region needs strong and effective networks and partnerships to successfully engage the community in decision-making and to address natural resource management issues.

Landcare is a community-based approach to addressing environmental problems and the long-term viability of agricultural production. It is about productivity, partnership, participation and people.

New Landcare Policy and Implementation Plan now available

In June 2009, the North Central Catchment Management Authority held a series of community consultation workshops across the region to provide Landcare groups with an opportunity to help re-shape Landcare support in response to reduced funding for Shire-based Landcare coordinators.

The workshops provided a valuable Landcare community perspective to this process. The information gained has been used to inform the North Central CMA's Landcare Support Policy and twelve month Implementation Plan. The Policy and associated action plan clearly establish both North Central CMA's intent to provide ongoing support for Landcare and what can be expected from the North Central CMA over the next twelve months and into the future.
