The Natural Resource Managment Operation Group's key function is to undertake on-ground activities in priority areas (in and adjacent to waterways) to achieve an improvement in the condition of the region's waterways according to established short- and long-term targets in the Regional River Health Strategy. Activities are prioritised according to the risk that threatening processes pose to key environmental, social and economic assets on a site-by-site basis. Activities are then ranked and addressed in priority order.

Key objectives include:

• To implement on-ground activities in the North Central CMAs capacity as 'caretakers of river health'
• To actively seek community support and involvement in on-ground river health activities
• To coordinate major innovative programs aimed at river health protection and restoration, and floodplain management

Activities:

• Stabilisation of waterways (including streambeds, streambanks and gullies) to halt erosion and reduce sediment and nutrient inputs
• Riparian restoration including selective woody weed management (such as willows) and associated revegetation and fencing
• Enhancement of in-stream habitat, including the reintroduction of logs into waterways
• Provision of fish passage where man-made barriers have prevented the natural migration of native fish, such as Murray Cod
• Coordination of on-ground activities to reconnect floodplain wetlands to waterways
• Delivery of river health management advice and information to community members and other organisations
• Delivery of incentive programs to landholders for the above listed activities
