While floods are an expected and sometimes healthy part of how our environment operates, we also need to be aware of the economic and social damages they can cause.
When floods do occur across our region it unfortunately provides those who live in flood prone areas very little time in which to respond. For that reason, it is important that all residents are aware of their flood risk and of some of the basic measures they can take to avoid its effects.
As with most events in life, good planning is the key to minimising risk. With flooding the principle is simple - plan and develop valuable assets in areas safe from flooding in the first instance. Previous examples of poor planning have led to the placement of homes, commercial properties and public and private infrastructure in areas of high flooding risks resulting in large economic losses.
What is the role of the North Central Catchment Management Authority in managing floods?
The North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) aims to protect people and property from the impacts of flooding and to minimise the cost to the community.
- This is achieved by managing all historical information on flooding and gathering information on flooding as it occurs;
- In areas which haven't yet experienced a flood, determining how far floodwaters are likely to extend and high they are likely to rise;
- Provide flood information and advice to property owners and developers so that they can make informed decisions;
- Place controls on development within flood prone areas and ensure that any new development is undertaken appropriately;
- Work with local authorities and communities to develop and implement plans to minimise flooding and flood damage.
How can I find out whether my property may be subject to flooding?
Property owners, consultants and developers are encouraged to seek advice from the North Central CMA about the possibility of flooding and to understand the potential risks.
