Community members in North Central Victoria have positioned themselves and their natural resources to recover from the devastation of drought, thanks to the support of the North Central Catchment Management Authority's (CMA) Drought Recovery Team.

The small team of dedicated and passionate staff attained a total of $2.9 million from the Victorian Governments Drought Employment Program to successfully deliver 326 work plans between November 2006 and June 2007. Work plans comprised a mix of individual landholders and community groups achieving a range of on-ground works, awareness raising and knowledge improvement activities to protect, enhance and restore high priority natural resources in the catchment and adapt to the problems of drought.

Landcare Grants

Last year we had over 70 groups, including Landcare groups, schools, councils and sports clubs in the North Central CMA region who utilised over $340,000 worth of grant funding.

Some of the key outcomes included $10,000 'Ramsar Wetlands to Loddon River Link - Stage 1 the Kerang Landcare Group improved biodiversity, which protected remnant vegetation by fencing, establish further indigenous flora and removed boxthorns.

The Echuca West Salinity & Landcare Group received $2,000 to run a Native Grass identification and production day which they are running on the 1st of November 2007.

Recent major integrated projects included funding to a primary school group to establish a totally indigenous ecosystem through the introduction on indigenous plants and weed control, and funding to control rabbits, spiny rush and blackberries.

These outcomes would not have been possible, let alone successful, without the commitment and continued support from the State Government towards Landcare and community initiatives within our region.

Communities within the North Central region have a history of positive action in relation to Landcare, and the Second Generation Landcare Grants Program is another demonstration of the North Central CMA's commitment to a whole of government and community approach to working in partnership towards the effective management of our natural resources.
