Landcare
Seedling For Planting
Seedling ready for planting
Landcare was launched in 1986 at Winjallock, in the western part of the north central region. It grew out of local Soil Conservation and Farm Tree groups and an alliance between the then Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands and the Victorian Farms Federation.

The number of Landcare groups continues to grow and we have over 180 Landcare and natural resource management groups within the north central catchment.

The future health of our environment is in the hands of the regional community - people who farm the land, live in the towns, manage natural resources, attend local schools or volunteer their time and energy for a better environment.

The region needs strong and effective networks and partnerships to successfully engage the community in decision-making and to address natural resource management issues.

Landcare is a community-based approach to addressing environmental problems and the long-term viability of agricultural production. It is about productivity, partnership, participation and people.

Second Generation Landcare Grants - Now OPEN August 2008

The Second Generation Landcare Grants Program is one of a number of strategic programs from DSE's Landcare and Sustainable Landscapes Branch which aims to improve stewardship of Victoria's rural landscape. In 2008/09, the Victorian Landcare Program will again make available State government funding through the SGLG for community projects with a deliberate emphasis on "strengthening and building the capacity of the community to undertake Natural Resource Management". Continued investment in the SGLG program will help to meet future economic, environmental and social challenges and ultimately achieve the vision for Landcare in Victoria of Healthy Landscapes - Sustainable Communities.
